As promised this page hopes to provide the beginner golfer with an indepth break down of the golf clubs available and their average distance.

Woods

The hardest club to master, even a professional can have difficulty mastering his driving. Woods do number from a 1 wood to a 11 wood. But by far the most common woods are number 1, 3, 4 and 5.

1-wood, avg. distance - mens - over 230 yards, ladies - over 185 yards.

3-wood, --------------------------------- 210-230 yards, ----------- 170-185 yards.

4-wood, --------------------------------- 190-210 yards, ----------- 155-170 yards.

5-wood, --------------------------------- 170-190 yards, ----------- 140-155 yards.

Irons

From iron 1-9, each club going downwards from number 9 has less loft. Which means more distance but less height. A 9-iron is ideal for chipping onto a green because of the loft, which means the ball will not run as much when it lands. Whereas a 1-iron is ideal for driving down a long fairway.
