Golf tees

The tee is largely a piece of equipment over looked by many golfers. While it's a standard piece of kit any golfer needs to be able to play a round of golf. Current golfers have now been provided with the largest variety of tees ever available for purchase.

The original tees were made from wood, and traditionally feature a small cup to place the ball upon. The original tee measured two and three quarter inches in length. The plastic tee was developed as a cheaper alternative, ideal for golfers who tend to lose alot of tees.

The one downside to plastic tees is they tend to bend over time. This could actually mean they are not cheaper over a prolonged period of use. Wooden tees tend to keep their shape better, so do not need to be replaced so often, but they can snap.

There are two fundamental tee designs, the first being the straight up and down tee.

This style of tee allows a golfer to vary the height it's placed into the ground. The second fundamental tee design is the step height tee.

The advantage of these tees is they make sure the tee is always placed into the ground at an exact height. It's takes any psychological worry out of the equation, so the golfer can concentrate just of his drive, instead of worrying if the tee has been placed at the correct height.

White does remain the most common colour for a tee, green is obviously a bad choice of colour because they easily get lost. The colour of a tee does not signify anything about it's design, other than distinguishing it from tees used by your golfing partner.

It is however possible to buy a set of tees of varying heights which contain different bands of colour. The various colours will signify a different length of the tee.

The biggest current revolution in tees is the brushed tipped tee. Current UK golfing star Justin Rose uses this variety of tee. Below is a picture of a brushed tipped tee,

As you can see the tee above does not feature a cup, instead it contains circles of tiny bristles to hold the ball instead. The idea behind the tee is to decrease any resistance the ball has when placed within a cupped tee.

The bristles are flexible in nature, unlike a plastic or wooden cup which is solid in nature. Players such as Justin Rose also believe the brushed tipped tee also provide increased accuracy.
